The University of Sarajevo is a comprehensive public higher education and research institution, and the largest contributor to scientific output in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It brings together 22 faculties, 3 art academies, 5 research institutes and 5 centres, covering more than 200 departments across social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, medicine, and the arts. With more than 500 active projects implemented across its 30 member institutions, the University of Sarajevo has extensive experience in international cooperation through EU, regional, and national research programmes. One of its largest member institutions is the Faculty of Science (UNSA-FS), which includes five departments: Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology, and Geography. The Faculty of Science provides education in fundamental scientific disciplines, while maintaining a leading national role in both theoretical and experimental research.
Within the IFIGENEIA project, the University of Sarajevo contributes to several work packages, supporting multidisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange within the consortium. Its main role is as a mentoring-receiving partner, with the Faculty of Science actively engaged in strengthening research capacities and developing scientific expertise through collaboration with leading European partners. In parallel with these efforts, the University is working on the establishment of the Ion Source Laboratory in Sarajevo, aiming to develop new expertise and contribute to the design of next-generation LINAC technologies for societal applications.
Through its participation in IFIGENEIA, the University of Sarajevo further strengthens its role in European research networks and contributes to the development of sustainable research excellence in Southeast Europe.
