1 Project Overview & Goals

What is the IFIGENEIA project about?

The IFIGENEIA project is a Horizon Europe Coordination and Support Action aimed at designing a LINAC-based facility for radioisotope production in Europe. It focuses on radiation therapy, diagnostics, theranostics, and cultural heritage applications.

What are the main objectives of the IFIGENEIA Excellence Hubs?

The main objectives include developing a design study and business plan for implementing LINAC technology, producing a wide range of marketable radioisotopes, and establishing interconnected Excellence Hubs in Greece, Slovenia, and Cyprus

Which regions and countries are involved in IFIGENEIA?

The project spans Greece, Slovenia, Cyprus, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, with collaboration from Germany and Switzerland, bringing together 22 partners.

What is the expected impact of the LINAC-based facility?

It is expected to offer a compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to nuclear reactors, enabling broader isotope production and enhancing healthcare and cultural sectors.

How does IFIGENEIA aim to promote nuclear medicine in Europe?

By building capacities, offering mentorship, fostering public-private partnerships, and providing a strategic investment plan, IFIGENEIA aims to establish a lasting framework for nuclear medicine across Europe.

2 Consortium and Roles

Who coordinates the IFIGENEIA project?

The project is coordinated by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece.

Who are the main partners involved?

The consortium includes universities, research institutes, hospitals, regional authorities, and businesses, each responsible for specific tasks such as technical design, training, business planning, and project management. For details see page – click here.

How are Excellence Hubs structured across Greece, Slovenia, and Cyprus?

Within the IFIGENENIA Excellence Hubs will be established in three participating countries. Each hub will bring together regional stakeholders from healthcare, academia, industry, and public sectors, fostering collaboration, training, and innovation.

What is the role of partners from non-EU countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina?

They benefit from mentorship activities to enhance their research and innovation capacities, aiming to prepare them for future excellence hubs.

3 Work Packages (WPs)

What are the main work packages of IFIGENEIA

There are six WPs: WP1 (Project Management), WP2 (Education, Dissemination, Inclusion and Diversity), WP3 (LINAC design dedicated to radioisotope production and other societal applications), WP4 (Radioisotope production and radiopharmaceuticals), WP5 (Business plan for end users: From science to business including spinoffs), and WP6 (Mentorship).

What activities are planned under WP1 (Project Management)?

Activities include project coordination, risk management, quality assurance, ethics oversight, IPR management, and data management planning.

What is the focus of WP2 on Education, Dissemination, Inclusion and Diversity?

WP2 targets skills training, communication and dissemination through various media, stakeholder workshops, secondments, and inclusion strategies.

What does WP3 (LINAC design) involve?

It includes RFQ design, beam dynamics studies, hardware specifications, target optimization, control system planning, and radiation safety assessments.

What are the goals of WP4 regarding radioisotope production?

WP4 aims to establish lab conditions, identify optimal isotopes and ligands, and develop pre-clinical protocols for ligand-isotope testing.

How does WP5 plan to ensure financial sustainability and business planning?

WP5 includes exploitation mapping, business case development, investor engagement, and strategic investment planning.

What is included in WP6 Mentorship?

WP6 provides mentoring to BiH partners, training through an Accelerator School, and a Virtual Interactive RI production unit.

4 Training, Mentorship, and Inclusion

What training activities are offered through the Accelerator School?

Courses on accelerator physics, beam dynamics, and safety, including practical sessions and simulations, are to be offered within the IFIGENEIA.

How does IFIGENEIA support mentoring in the Western Balkans?

Through exchanges, training, and capacity building for West Balkan stakeholders, fostering future excellence hubs.

What strategies are used to ensure diversity and inclusion?

Appointing a Diversity Officer, inclusive policy regulation, awareness activities, and web visibility support this goal.
