Jožef Stefan Institute as Slovenia’s Leading Research Institution

The Jožef Stefan Institute is Slovenia’s leading scientific research institute dedicated to science and technology, covering a broad spectrum of basic and applied research. With strong international collaboration and a clear mission to generate new knowledge, develop advanced technologies, and support innovation and entrepreneurship, the Institute plays a key role in Slovenia’s digital and green transformation.

Multidisciplinary Research across Science and Engineering

Established in 1949, the Institute is named after the renowned Slovenian physicist Jožef Stefan, best known for the Stefan-Boltzmann law. Its teams specialise in natural sciences, life sciences, and engineering, and conduct research across a wide range of fields, including natural sciences, engineering, biotechnology, nuclear technologies, and information sciences. The Institute drives innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, nanotechnology, chemistry, new materials, and biotechnology, turning excellent research into solutions with real-world value.

The Institute employs over 1,200 researchers, engineers, doctoral students, and support staff working in numerous laboratories and research units. It consists of 28 research departments as well as several centres and other units, operating at five locations. In 2024 alone, the Institute participated in 769 research projects and, to date, has participated in 13 ERC-funded projects since the European Research Council was established. In terms of scientific excellence, it published more than 1,060 scientific papers in 2024 alone, which have collectively received over 60,000 citations overall. The Institute also fosters the education of young scientists, and in the period from 2000 to 2024, 835 young researchers were employed at the Institute.

Beyond its research activities, the Institute actively contributes to the development of science policy, supports knowledge and technology transfer to industry, and promotes the green and digital transition, while also popularising science in society. Acting as a bridge between science, industry, government, and the educational sector, the Institute contributes to both social and economic progress through its scientific excellence and innovation.

The Role of JSI in the IFIGENEIA Project

Role within IFIGENEIA: Jožef Stefan Institute is leading Work Package 2, focusing on education, dissemination, inclusion, and diversity. This role is essential for ensuring that IFIGENEIA’s activities and results are communicated clearly and consistently, and that knowledge, tools, and good practices reach the right audiences across research, industry, public authorities, education, and society. The Jožef Stefan Institute contributes accelerator expertise and activities in the exploitation of results, dissemination, and communication, helping turn project outputs into practical value and increasing their uptake beyond the consortium. Through coordinated communication, dissemination, and outreach, the Institute will strengthen the project’s visibility, foster stakeholder engagement, and support wider participation and inclusion. In the long term, this work underpins the sustainability of IFIGENEIA by building lasting networks, enabling continued use of results, and supporting an impact that extends beyond the project’s lifetime.
