Advancing innovation at the intersection of clinical care, research and education, Papageorgiou General Hospital (Geniko Nosokomeio Papageorgiou, GNP) brings strong clinical expertise and advanced medical infrastructure to the IFIGENEIA project. As one of Northern Greece’s leading hospitals, GNP contributes its experience in radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and translational research to support the development and evaluation of next-generation radiopharmaceutical approaches.
Papageorgiou General Hospital is a prominent healthcare provider in Northern Greece and a non-profit private law entity fully integrated into the National Health System, operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and governed by a seven-member Board of Directors. The hospital provides medical services to both adult and paediatric patients, including specialised care in nuclear medicine and radiotherapy, and is closely linked to the research and educational activities of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), particularly the Medical School and the Faculty of Sciences.
With more than 2,000 staff members and trainees, GNP conducts research across a broad spectrum of health sciences, from basic molecular biology and translational research to clinical trials and healthcare services. The hospital operates an outpatient clinic capable of serving up to 1,200 patients per day and around 300,000 per year and is equipped with ultramodern infrastructure, including PET/CT and MRI scanners (with an additional MRI planned), two computed tomography systems, angiography and cardiovascular angiography systems, two linear accelerators with photon and electron beams, and a high-dose-rate brachytherapy unit. It also features full computerisation, tele-consultation systems and advanced medical imaging technologies.
In addition, Papageorgiou General Hospital hosts a fully equipped and licensed Experimental and Research Centre (www.rcph.gr) with accredited animal facilities for rodents and rabbits and an experimental surgery unit, operating in compliance with national and European legislation (PD 56/2013 and Directive 2010/63/EU). Medical physics activities are coordinated through the hospital’s Medical Physics Department, and the institution maintains a strong commitment to staff training, collaboration with academic partners and the integration of innovative technologies into clinical practice.
Within the IFIGENEIA project, Papageorgiou General Hospital plays a key role in strengthening collaboration and advancing pre-clinical research. The hospital coordinates activities related to secondments and the exchange of good practices (T2.3) among project partners, fostering knowledge transfer across the consortium. In parallel, it contributes to the development of protocols for the pre-clinical evaluation of ligand–isotope compounds (T4.5). Acting as an important clinical end-user within the project, GNP also supports the dissemination of results to medical communities and helps facilitate the future integration of innovative radiopharmaceutical approaches into clinical practice.
