The State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) plays a central role in delivering public healthcare in Cyprus, providing comprehensive medical services across the entire country. As the largest healthcare provider on the island, SHSO operates an extensive network of hospitals, health centres, and emergency services, ensuring accessible and continuous care for citizens of all ages.
SHSO manages 9 hospitals and 38 health centres located in all cities and provinces of Cyprus, delivering round-the-clock healthcare services that cover the full spectrum of population health needs. Key components of the organisation include the Directorate of Mental Health, which operates the country’s only specialised mental health hospital (Athalassa Hospital) alongside multiple mental health service structures nationwide, and the Ambulances Directorate, which connects the healthcare network through 24 ambulance stations and 72 ambulances across the island. Recognising its responsibility as a leading national healthcare provider, SHSO continues to invest in infrastructure, human resources, and research while implementing an ambitious reorganisation plan to strengthen administrative and financial autonomy within Cyprus’s General Health System.
Within the IFIGENEIA project, SHSO plays a key role in connecting research with real-world clinical practice. The organisation provides access to healthcare facilities for pilot activities, supports the recruitment of healthcare professionals and patients, and contributes clinical expertise and data for the evaluation of the project’s solutions. Through these activities, SHSO helps ensure that the innovations developed within the project are clinically relevant, feasible in real healthcare environments, and aligned with the needs of healthcare providers and patients.
