In the scope of the IFIGENEIA project invited lecture Next Generation Technologies that can Impact Cancer Therapy: FLASH, SFRT and TRNT was held on Tuesday 11 November 2025 at the Faculty of Medicine (University of Ljubljana).
In the introduction Prof. Dr. DABR. Joao Seco from the IFIGENEIA project consortium (The German Cancer Research Center, DKFZ Heildelberg) presented general overview of cancer, statistics and treatment, while the next part was focused on new promising technologies for cancer treatment.
For example, FLASH-RT (FLASH Radiotherapy) delivers ultra-high dose rates within miliseconds, eliciting differential biological effects that spare healthy tissue, SFRT (Spatially Fractioned Radiotherapy) employs non-uniform dose distributions, exploiting spatial dose modulation to enhance therapeutic ratios in bulky of radioresistant tumors, while TRNT (Targeted Radionuclide Therapy) leverages radiopharmaceuticals that selectively deliver radiation to cancer cells, enabling systemic treatment of metastatic disease with precision.

Prof. Dr. DABR. Joao Seco also visited the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics in Ljubljana, where he presented Harnessing Particle Physics for Real-time Monitoring in Radiotherapy: The Promise of Prompt Gamma Imaging to students and the general public.
His visit also sparked the interest of Slovenian journalists, and he participated in the prime-time news program Odmevi on national television TV SLO 1, where he shared his thoughts on cancer treatment, new methods, and national screening programmes for cancer early detection.
