The four-year international project IFIGENEIA (Excellence Hub for LINAC-based Innovation in Nuclear Medicine) was officially launched with a kick-off meeting in early April 2025 in Thessaloniki, Greece. The project brings together 22 partners from six countries—Greece, Slovenia, Cyprus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, and Switzerland.
Funded by the European Commission under the WIDERA programme, IFIGENEIA aims to establish Excellence Hubs in Greece, Slovenia, and Cyprus, focusing on LINAC (linear accelerator) technology. These hubs will serve as sustainable structures to improve mid-term access to nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. By applying a quadruple helix approach—connecting researchers, industry, the public sector, and civil society—the project fosters innovation and cross-sector collaboration. The project will also facilitate the transfer of expertise to Bosnia and Herzegovina, supporting capacity building across the region.
IFIGENEIA addresses key challenges in current radioisotope production methods and promotes LINAC technology as an environmentally friendly, flexible, and cost-effective alternative, capable of producing a wider range of isotopes.
