On Saturday, March 28, 2026, the Jožef Stefan Institute is organising Open Day at Jožef Stefan Institute, spotlighting its upgraded TANDETRON accelerator, the only research accelerator in Slovenia.
Details of the open day are available here: http://dnevi.ijs.si/en/programme-2026/#DOVENG
🏛️ Organisation: Jožef Stefan Institute
📍 Location: Reactor Centre, Brinje 40, Dol pri Ljubljani, Slovenia
📅 Date: 28 March 2026
Researchers and visitors can get up close with the new 3 MV Tandetron tandem ion accelerator and see firsthand how it pushes the limits of scientific research inside the Microanalytical Centre. For a bit of history, the Institute has been a leader in accelerator-based science since 1956, starting with the old Van de Graaff machine. Since 1997, researchers have been using the reliable 2 MV Tandetron accelerator to conduct studies that reach well beyond Slovenia, connecting the Institute with networks like RADIATE and ARIE across Europe.
The latest upgrade is pretty major as the new accelerator boosts the available voltage by 50%. That means more possibilities, not just for physics, but for fusion research, materials science, biology, medicine, and archaeometry. This kind of equipment widens the playground for all sorts of interdisciplinary research. The event ties into the IFIGENEIA project, which aims to push collaboration and fresh ideas in accelerator technology and nuclear medicine. Public outreach is a big focus, and this Open Day brings people in to see what advanced research infrastructure looks like and what possibilities it enables. With this upgrade, Slovenia steps up its game in European science networks, setting the stage for new discoveries in accelerator-based research.
