As part of the 2nd Annual Meeting of the IFIGENEIA Project held in Ljubljana in May 2026, Dr Gorazd Drevenšek from the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Medicine and Prof. Dr Primož Pelicon from the Jožef Stefan Institute spoke to Bloomberg Adria TV about the growing importance of radioisotopes for healthcare, research and industrial development, as well as the role of the IFIGENEIA project in strengthening Europe’s capabilities.

The essential role of radionuclides

During the interview, they highlighted the essential role of radionuclides in modern medicine and pharmacy. Radioisotopes are indispensable for the diagnosis and treatment of numerous diseases, particularly cancer, where they support both highly precise imaging and targeted therapies. Ensuring a reliable supply of medical radioisotopes is therefore crucial for patients and healthcare systems across Europe.

Today’s major challenges in production

The discussion also addressed one of today’s major challenges: Europe remains heavily dependent on a limited number of production facilities, leaving the supply chain vulnerable to disruptions. Strengthening Europe’s production capacity has therefore become an important strategic priority for both healthcare resilience and technological sovereignty.

The role of IFIGENEIA

The interview also explored how the Horizon Europe-funded IFIGENEIA project aims to contribute to addressing these challenges. By bringing together leading research organisations, universities, industry and innovation stakeholders, the project is fostering collaboration and developing knowledge and technologies that could support more sustainable radioisotope production in Southeast Europe while strengthening scientific excellence and regional cooperation.

Slovenia’s role within the IFIGENEIA

The speakers also highlighted Slovenia’s role within the IFIGENEIA project, focusing on collaboration between research organisations, universities and industry. They discussed ongoing research and technological development, as well as the broader opportunities that innovation in this field may bring to science, healthcare and the economy.
