Strengthening cutting-edge cancer research and innovation, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) plays a key role in advancing scientific excellence within the IFIGENEIA project.

The Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum (German Cancer Research Center, DKFZ) is Germany’s largest biomedical research center with a worldwide reputation of excellence in basic and translational cancer research. Established in 1964 as a foundation under public law, the DKFZ today has 3424 staff (870 foreign employees from 86 nations, June 2024). In 2019, the total budget was 319 million Euros funded by the Federal German Government, the State of Baden-Württemberg and third-party funding. The DKFZ is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres – Germany’s largest research organisation. The strategic goals of the DKFZ are to contribute towards a better understanding of fundamental processes in cancer and to develop innovative methods of cancer diagnostics and therapy. Research at the DKFZ is divided into 5 main research programs:

  • Cell Biology and Tumour Biology;
  • Functional and Structural Genomics;
  • Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention;
  • Immunology, Infection and Cancer;
  • Imaging and Radiooncology.

Within the IFIGENEIA project, DKFZ plays a crucial role in transferring its extensive knowledge, expertise and advanced research capabilities to project partners. Building on its strengths in cancer biology, imaging technologies, prevention strategies and innovative therapeutic approaches, DKFZ supports the development of new solutions and fosters collaboration across disciplines. Through knowledge exchange, capacity building and scientific guidance, DKFZ significantly contributes to strengthening the project’s overall impact and advancing innovation in nuclear medicine and healthcare.
