GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung featured as an IFIGENEIA project partner

A pioneer in particle therapy and accelerator science, GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, with a well-established record of scientific excellence, brings valuable expertise to the IFIGENEIA project, supporting capacity building and advancing innovation from the discovery of new chemical elements to ion beam tumour therapy.

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany, operates a unique accelerator for heavy ions. Scientists from all over the world use the accelerated ions for experiments in various fields of research, ranging from particle, nuclear and atomic physics via plasma physics and materials research up to biophysics and tumour therapy. In addition, they continually develop new and impressive applications.

Research at GSI has already achieved significant results, including the discovery of six new chemical elements and the development of a new type of tumour therapy using ion beams.

Currently, the international accelerator facility FAIR, one of the largest research projects worldwide, is being built in Darmstadt. At FAIR, matter that usually only exists in the depths of space will be produced in a lab for research and to gain new insights into the structure of matter and the evolution of the universe from the Big Bang to the present. FAIR will generate particle beams of a previously unparalleled intensity and quality and is one of the world’s biggest and most complex construction projects for international cutting-edge research.

Within the IFIGENEIA project, GSI contributes its expertise by leading Task 6.2: Master Classes in Particle Therapy. Through its important contribution to the dissemination of particle therapy, GSI supports the next-generation scientists for the next-generation facilities with the aim of advancing technology and healthcare innovative solutions.
